Nigeria origin players set NBA draft record

A record eight players who were either born in Nigeria or have Nigerian parents have been selected by teams in the National Basketball Association at the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Ohio based Cleveland Cavaliers opened the big night for Nigeria and Africa by selecting Isaac Okoro with the 5th overall pick at the event held last Wednesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Players Born in Nigeria:

Precious Achiuwa – picked 20th overall by the Miami Heat.

Udoka Azubuike – picked 27th overall by the Utah Jazz.

Players with Parents from Nigeria:

Isaac Okoro – picked 5th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Onyeka Okongwu – picked 6th overall by the Atlanta Hawks.

Daniel Oturu – picked 33rd overall by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Players with Father from Nigeria:

Zeke Nnaji – picked 22nd overall by the Denver Nuggets – born in

Desmond Bane – picked 30th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jordan Nwora – picked 45th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks.

In total, there are currently 19 Nigerians playing in the NBA. The list includes Greece born Nigerian Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is the defending Most Valuable Player in the league.
